Edinburgh Society of Musicians The Edinburgh Society of Musicians is an organisation which promotes practical music-making in Edinburgh. It has been in existence since 1887 and owns a beautiful Jacobean style recital room overlooking Dean Village in the West End of the city. Chamber music recitals are given every Saturday evening at 8 pm from early October until the end of June. Its stated objects include "cultivating the art and practice of music in Edinburgh, and promoting social intercourse amongst musicians and those interested in music." The historical archive and music collection of the society was purchased by the National Library of Scotland in 1982. The Society attracts a variety of performers from students in search of experience to accomplished amateurs and professionals, well known Scottish or international musicians. If you would like to perform for us, please contact Dr Kingsley and include your telephone number. We will get in touch with you. Please note that we do not pay fees although we can help with expenses. There is a modest annual membership subscription fee but the concerts are open and admission is free. In the course of the season, members have the opportunity to hear a wide range of compositions including musical rarities and occasional first performances. If you are interested in becoming a member and have any questions, please contact Graham Bodenham or use the online membership form (you will need to print it, fill it in and post it back). There are wonderful rehearsal facilities which include the use of Steinway and Bosendorfer grand pianos. A Zuckermann: Flemish V harpsichord built in 1978 is available also. Pianists (including 2-piano duos), recitalists, chamber music groups, small choirs and new baroque ensembles will find it an attractive venue to prepare for their concerts. The society has a list of music teachers; you may wish to consult or add your name and details to the list. The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music use the premises for examinations during the months of March, June and November. At other times, the rooms may also be available for members to rent for tuition, rehearsals and performances but subject to certain conditions (eg availability of an ESM steward, no entrance fee may be charged, dancing is not allowed, the premises may not be used for parties) due to the age and physical limitations of the building. The rooms are currently not available to rent due to ongoing building repair works until August. All new and existing users should email Salvatore Tomasino ASAP for further information about availability and our new, revised booking system. text contributed by Beverly Gray (President) & Liz Wight The
